According to an enormous unabridged dictionary at a place I once worked, there's a verb in English, grimthorpe, which means "to restore a building in a style inconsistent with the original."
I did some research later and decided it must derive from Lord Grimthorpe, a Victorian architect. Like Viollet-Le-Duc, he also restored a cathedral, St. Albans, but his efforts were called "more enthusiastic than talented." In fact, a tour guide to St. Stephen's Church reads, "St Stephen's is the only one of St Albans' old churches to escape restoration by Lord Grimthorpe." Poor man. But I think he designed Big Ben's clock, unless I'm confusing him with someone else.
