I've always loved Catholic Church history - it's like a history of the worst of human nature. I don't think that Catholics, or even the clergy and administration are necessarily guilty of any of the excesses and cruelties of the Church as an institution, especially since they are victims of such policies. A married, child-fathering Jesus could serve to expose the Church's edicts as greedy and self-serving, rather than as reflecting the wishes of God, and I would imagine that realizing you'd spent your life in celibacy to satisfy a 1000-year-old concern regarding property inheritance, or, conversely, that you had been discouraged from using birth control to make more warriors for a Crusade that's been over for nearly that long, might be a bit vexing.
However, that said, I also don't understand what non-Catholic religious people might be upset about since I really don't know the rhetoric of other religions, other than the fact that Baptists hate it when Halloween falls on a Sunday and will petition the mayor to change the date of observance to Saturday, resulting in two days of people demanding candy instead of one.
