I'm one of those who didn't read the books (actually I don't like Tolkien's style-Couldn't get through The Fellowship of the Ring) and enjoyed the movie. However I do get what you're saying about way too many characters and getting very little background on most of them. I think what helped me was having enthusiastic real life friends who loved the books and filled me in on what I didn't know, before and after and watching the movies with them.
