I wished there had been a "friend both" option, because likely, that is what I would do.

... disheartening. I understand why people are doing it. Between the serial-adder freaks and threats of getting your fandom life discovered by your real life... I understand. But I hate see so many Friends ONly banners popping up, because it means newbies to the lj community will be left on the outside until they are "invited" into it in order to see the good stuff.
