Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday: Ate much pie. Mr. Glove makes a fabulous crust.
Stayed up all night last night, as Mr. Glove had to leave for the airport at a pre-dawn hour and he kept himself up until nearly 3 AM talking to me about changes he might make in his online magazine. He had a huge (nerd-based) readership for his audio thing, gave it up out of frustration, and wants to do it again, but differently. I am full of ideas, of course.
Anyway, I stayed up all night in case he missed his alarm, which would certainly have been a possibility. Since his (very old and decrepit) car wouldn't start in the new freezing cold, I had to drive him to the airport, but that way I got to see the sun come up. It looked like a postcard sent from the Bible, very pink-and-gold and striated; so easy to imagine angels of white descending on the wrecked car lot by the freeway.
I made him some mix CDs for his drive from New Orleans to the depths of Acadia. Apparently, he enjoyed them well enough that he drove at high speeds and even tried to elude a state trooper, thinking that it was an old person in a Crown Vic whose doddering erraticism he'd irritably passed miles prior. A car-lot angel (see above) was watching over him, as he has no ticket to show for his misdeed.
what do we do with the ashes? I am taking Penny (the mysteriously crippled guinea pig) to the vet tomorrow, probably for a last visit (fuck), and will be picking up dog ashes, as well. We just keep putting that task off... Anyway, Mr. G is somewhat upset that I am having to be the one who euthanizes animals all on my own, and I've got to say that I am not really thrilled about it either. The new dog issue was brought up in a phone call this evening, and Mr. G stopped just short of telling me to go get the rescue sheltie I like the looks of. However, I think we BOTH need to meet the dog, since it needs to get along with us, not just me. I have a nonsense notion that the dog and I will get along really well because the name he's been given is the same one I'd have been stuck with had I been born male. Travis. I would have been named Travis. It's a terrible name, but maybe not for a dog.
Gravitation: Ohmygodohmygod is this the worst anime ever? Well, actually, no. The side jokes are hysterical. However, the main story is predictable and embarrassing and the songs are unlistenable. I ended up turning the volume off during the "performance" sequences. Yuki is a cold bastard, Shu is a girl, etc., etc. And what's with the falling-off-the-shoulder tanktops that are even drawn like Shu has pinned them just-so??? I've not read the manga series because of the histrionics in the plot, as well as not liking the art, though I've seen the "remix" series posted at
yaoi_daily off and on. I know people love this, and it must be for the sugary melodrama and flouncing, but it's just way too artificially-flavored for my taste.
Mirage of Blaze: Well, I finally got the series downloaded in its entirety and finished watching. I'm disappointed that my .ogg player refused to play Japanese sound (though it's supposed to be there). However, since there were practically no subtitles, I suppose it was just as well that the English language dub refused to turn off. I was watching the series for a few scenes of homoerotic angst that would have been very moving, I'm sure, had they been present in my copies of the files. I've seen screencaps on a couple yaoi comms, so I know they exist. I thought I had the entire series, so either the scenes have been cut out for some reason, or there are further episodes. 1-13, right? Crap. Anyway, it's an okay story, although the angst is the best part and yet the plot mostly focuses on action, i.e., lots of spiritual shields and exorcisms and demonic fire lion-things. The characters also tend to have tiny feet, which is an overall anime problem, IMO. It reminds me too much of Beavis and Butthead, the little feet thing. Mr. G likes to tease me about this - it's nearly a phobia of mine.
Meine Liebe: Boys' school! With fancy uniforms - one even wears short-shorts and thigh-high gartered stockings with his cape! Handsome boys calling each other "My dearest companion" and having sword fights to defend one another's honor. So far, there are no girls who aren't dead sisters, though there is a king (?) whose large, stiff sausage curls appear to have been set with fireplace logs and Aquanet. The ML files have proven to be easy and speedy bitorrent downloads, so I'll plan on picking up this series until either I get bored or obtaining it gets more difficult.
FAKE: Oops, forgot one. An hour of slapstick and tease with no pay-off, yet plenty of room for stupid child characters. I tend to get testy when a "yaoi" cartoon doesn't deliver. I mean, it's cartoons; there aren't any good reasons for them to not have sex.
music recs wanted: Some specific ones, really. I always hear about how great Elliott Smith is, for instance, and I download songs and I just...don't get it. And I know a lot of people really adore him, and maybe I'm just not in the right mood when I'm listening or something, but I am not feeling the love. Anyway, if you're an Elliott Smith fan, what's your favorite song of his? or favorite few? For that matter, how about Wilco? Pavement? I'm sure I'll think of a bunch of bands I know I'm supposed to like but haven't had any kind of positive response to despite repeated exposures. Maybe I'm just not hearing the right songs. I need the gateway songs, people!
I'm perfecting a couple of compilations (see above re: Mr. Glove's driving mixes). I'll be asking for people to confirm their addresses soonish, I think...
A belated happy birthday to the divine
mei_x. I hope your day was wonderful, Mrs. Robinson ;)
