Which perhaps ought to tell me something about my true nature.
But the reasons, both posted a day or more ago:
The Ass-Kicking Ms.
pun (who needs shoes and a bag to match that belt if she's gonna be classy) wrote me a ficlet upon the occasion of the debut of her own fic archive, Movies In My Head. The story is here:
Yesterday's Rules
and in keeping with my current penchant for "truth" in gay Superman/fey billionaire stories, it is Rifty. Or maybe it's just hinty in a Riftward direction. I missed this when she posted it because I was trying to be a responsible adult and staying off of LJ (like that really works anyway). Pun doesn't write often, but she does it well. And if this one makes you angst too much, you might want to go to her site and read her incredibly dirty story, The Puppeteer, because, well, GUH.
Also,
rhiannonhero posted a QaF fic that is dedicated to me and my attic. I think it's mostly the attic, to tell the truth. And the twin bed by the windows that is an excellent lounging spot. And it's apparently a location very conducive to making the QaF characters come to painful life. It takes a great scene from the end of S1 and expands it in all directions before collapsing it back on itself--a little AU tucked inside the show itself. Read it and see what I mean.
Deeper Than Death
I'm not reading anyone else's QaF on purpose. This is between my Muffin and me and the TV set. Besides, it seems like kind of an excitable fandom, you know?
Actually, now that all my friends are running off to write other than SV, I've been very interested to see how other fandoms run themselves. HP is so friendly! Tinhatted and argumentative, but friendly about it! And HUGE! And full of Snape apologists! I'm sorry, but not even Alan Rickman can make that character sexy. QaF seems to be a bit topheavy with very young people, a larger-than-usual proportion of whom have reality/fantasy boundary issues. Like SV, QaF also seems to have a plethora of adherents who believe, straight-faced, that the angsty lead (i.e., substitute Brian for Lex) is emotionally void. There are also people who think Michael and Brian might actually get together one of these days. Yeah, that'll happen as soon as Clark and Lana hook up for real.
shaggirl makes fun of me for my squick at the HP canon names. Hogwarts. Dumbledore. Actually, pretty much anyone's name. Disney-ready names. It's not the chan that gets me--I'll read chan!--it's the cutesy names. And, having seen the second HP movie a zillion times now (liking it much better than the pedantic first movie)...is it just me, or does Daniel Radcliffe have kind of a lardy ass?

Minor PSA: If you have a hotmail e-mail address for me, please stop using it. I doubt anyone on LJ does have a hotmail address for me at this point, but if you do send anything to me via hotmail, I won't get it.

Date: 2004-04-01 09:18 pm (UTC)Well, the attic and the twin bed would be nothing with out my Rabbit sitting in her little chair typing away and listening to me read aloud whatever strikes my fancy. I love to hang out with you. You make me happy inside.
Thank you for the rec!

Yeah. It's a threesome and we've got no room for more in this relationship.

*narrows eyes*
You're talking about me, aren't you???? Are you saying I have problems accepting that Gale is not really fucking Randy? Are you saying that? 'Cause...that might be true. ;)
*smooches*
I love you.

Date: 2004-04-01 11:20 pm (UTC)When you can go to a signing and tell Randy Harrison that your dogs recognize his face and howl when they see him on the TV (or, better yet, on your screensaver with the rotating photos), then I'll put you in the boundary-lacking category. You're not there yet.
And they are totally fucking. Or close enough. It's frottage, at the very least, as well as some really fine kissing. There are plenty of gay men who never get fucked in the ass; what Gale and Randy are doing is the full act for (apparently) quite a few people. Yes, I found a site all about the nobility of frottage. And Greco-Roman wrestling. If you ever want to work up a tinhatted thesis, I can dig up the link.
And I, of course, love you, too.

Like SV, QaF also seems to have a plethora of adherents who believe, straight-faced, that the angsty lead (i.e., substitute Brian for Lex) is emotionally void.
Now this confuses me. Lex isn't emotionally *void* persay, and neither is Brian. Monumentally fucked up, absolutely. Family issues, especially with an overbearing father, check. But all I know in either fandom is Brian and Lex apologists. Brian tries to act emotionally void and distant. But no one believes him. Not Justin, Michael, Lindsay, Debbie, Emmett, Ben and Vic. Ted falls for it a little, but I think he knows him well enough to understand the truth. Melanie doesn't TRY to know him that well, but I think if she thinks back to all the times he's helped out, she'd agree (under pressure) that he's not "emotionally void". (She'd just say he's an asshole)
There are also people who think Michael and Brian might actually get together one of these days. Yeah, that'll happen as soon as Clark and Lana hook up for real.
Yeah, I've heard about these people, but I've seen only a few. There aren't many around here.

Date: 2004-04-02 10:19 pm (UTC)Perhaps it's just my opinion of how people express (in word, in deed) their feelings about Brian or Lex. Fans of both characters seem to want to romanticize coldness and distance, and thus attribute this approach overmuch to both characters. I'm more familiar with Lex onscreen than Brian, but I think it's true that neither one is particularly convincing as actually cold or emotionally distant to the viewing audience, even if they do occasionally fool their onscreen cohorts. I've read tons and tons of SV fanfic where people who claim to love Lex write him as this ridiculously cold clam, and what little QaF I've read besides Rhi's has followed this same pattern (except, of course, with Brian as the chilly posturer). I don't think that it's an issue fans not loving the character and being willing to standing in line to have a chance at being his Chief Apologist, but rather choosing to take what we get onscreen and twist it to extremes of surly behavior that the character never actually exhibits.
So, actually I agree with you, and I agree that the characters on their respective shows don't see Brian (or Lex) as being numb and vicious. I have seen enough fans of either character do this, though, that I found it amusing to point it out.
I do, from time to time, exaggerate or accentuate the absurd, for amusement, and this whole "other fandoms" overview would be an example of that ;)

Date: 2004-04-02 10:26 pm (UTC)Poor little Mr. Radcliffe. I am cruel, and I am cruel to children. But I'm sure he's paid a great deal of money to parade his lumpy butt around onscreen, so he's quite likely to end up with the last laugh in this case.

Date: 2004-04-02 06:57 am (UTC)Yeah, I've never really understood where they get that from on either character. That would be buying into their bullshit.
QaF seems to be a bit topheavy with very young people, a larger-than-usual proportion of whom have reality/fantasy boundary issues.
I don't know what you're talking about. Randy loves Gale forevah!

Date: 2004-04-02 10:29 pm (UTC)Fangirls love "bad" boys? Hell if I know. It's boring. The actual characters are much more interesting than some people seem to want them to be.
Well, Randy does love Gale 4eva!!!!!!! Duh. But he doesn't love random married female fans 4eva!!!! Some of the DVD signing stories are...entertaining. If I were either one of those guys, I'd insist on a Popemobile for any future public appearances.

I must confess, I have HP issues, but I'm trying to work through them. Whenever I begin to read, I can't stop picturing the onscreen kids--all massively anti-sexy, IMO--and I don't enjoy those pictures. I've read Dana's HP stuff and have tried to read stories by a couple of authors whose other work I really love...but I'm just never going to be a big HP fan.

Bwahahahahahahahahahaha! Alas, I will spend my life classless as I don't even cary a bag. At least, not a handbag. Honestly, though, resigning myself not to be classy takes some of the pressure off. *scratches self and belches in public*
