POV, X-Men, glorious hair

I am drawn by the allure of second person POV. I know everyone hates reading it, but I...can't help it. And also, I am trying to write a happy Clex story and it's not working because it seems completely false, like I'm writing a story about effigies instead of real boys. Uh, make that "real" boys.
Finally saw X-Men 2. I'd forgotten it was even in my Netflix queue, and I'd probably have taken it out if I'd been paying attention. Luckily, I was oblivious. What a fun movie! More fun than the first one, which I thought was not-terrible. It wasn't until this movie, however, that I realized that Logan = Wolverine (yeah, I've never read the comics). Isn't Logan-Rogue a popular pairing? But he'd never fuck her! She's, like, his niece or something. Anyway, this second film made me interested in the comic books. I have some dim awareness that, like Supes and Bats, there are a ton of different storylines and competing books. Which is the "real" one, or where should a person start with X-Men?
Went and got my hair trimmed today, and had the blonde chunk emphasized. In my poll the other day? Where I asked you all how glorious you thought my hair really was? Most of you were correct, but those who gave me a 7 or below...well, death to the unbelievers. I am going to attempt to take some glorious photos later, perhaps.

rhiannonhero: I'll have it for you later tonight.
ETA: cell phone thing: Apparently, my phone phobia extends to messages, too. I was a bit overwhelmed by the quantity of messages I have waiting for me...and I haven't listened to them all yet. So if you're wondering why I haven't said anything...I'm lame. And chicken. This meme exposes my soft, pallid underbelly, doesn't it?

Date: 2004-04-08 06:12 pm (UTC)Wow, isn't that a tough question... *g* Well, Uncanny X-Men picks up where X-Men left off - but if you like more modern style of artwork, I'd definitely recommend the Ultimate X-Men title. I've been a long time X-Men fan (primarily of Wolverine) and that title blew me away. The earlier stuff (pre issue #30-something) is better, since it still has Andy Kubert on art, but the recent stuff isn't bad. And if you like Wolverine, I'd really, REALLY strongly suggest picking up Origins (a mini-run of 6 issues that's available in tradeback), as well as Weapon X by Barry Windsor-Smith (also available in tradeback). The last one, Weapon X? My all time favourite, both for the artwork and the damn painful storyline. Both Origin and Weapon X tell the story of Wolverine pre-X-Men and how he became who he is - very good stuff.
I will now stop rambling, I swear... ;)

Date: 2004-04-08 08:06 pm (UTC)I was at the comic store today and there seemed to be 5-6 different X-Men titles, so I just sort of gave up without even looking at them. I'll definitely check out Ultimate X-Men and see if I can find Origins and Weapon X. From the films, Dr. Xavier, Wolverine and Jean are my favorites, but I get the impression that Jean is pretty much reviled by fans. However, I am not sure if that is fans of the comics or fans of the films or both. Anyway, while I found the first X-Men entertaining enough to watch, I really enjoyed this second one enough to have a bit of a jones for source material. Thank you so much for the recommendations.
so pulpy, so satisfying...
Date: 2004-04-08 10:04 pm (UTC)2 of my favorites:
"From the Ashes" It's a graphic novel reprinting Uncanny #168-#176.
Has a great plot line involving Storm, Shadowcat, and Angel, in the sewers of NYC, with the Morlocks, who are mutants who are too other to pass on the surface. I think you might like comics Storm. She is tough and cool (I think of Angela B, not Halle B). It's an oldie but a goodie. Everyone loves to know how an Angel lost his wings...
Also, I love the story arc that involved the legacy virus, especially the 'Fatal Attractions' crossover (at the time, the main books were X-Men, U X-Men, Excalibur, X-Factor, X-Force, and Wolverine). This story line was centered around a virus that only killed mutants, and it was really like a plague, complete with purple/black buboes (is that the word? bubonic plague type sores, in any case.) on the victims. It had a devastating effect on everyone involved, and caused lots of existential dread and despair and doubt. Fun, eh? I certainly enjoyed it. Also, in the midst of the misery of Wolverine #75, lives my favorite Jean/Logan moment. But I wouldn't want to spoil ya, so I won't get into that.
And the X-verse is hopelessly complicated, I think. When I go to the comic store, I always get someone to tell me what's happening in the Xbooks, just so I can laugh at how I have no idea! I don't think there is a right book or place to start, really. There's an overview up at Crack Van, I think, and there's also http://www.uncannyxmen.net/ Also, if you are interested in older stories, Marvel reprints them in a black and white (cheap!) series called 'The Essential X-Men'.

Date: 2004-04-09 12:52 pm (UTC)Mystique is Nightcrawler's mother? Well, that's probably not part of movie canon. The notion of (movie) Mystique as a mother of...anything, is rather amusing.
I'll check out the crack_van overview, as well. Whoo! So many new toys!

2nd person is great if it's well done; I haven't seen much I've liked--though when it's good, it's really good...
