sick puppy

So, last night the Mr. and I happened to notice that our dog's face was allofasudden lopsided. Like, with a grapefruit on one side of his jaw. Dog facial manipulation revealed a ginormous mass that seemed likely to be a hugely inflamed gland. We also noticed his (already kind of tiny) eyes were practically swollen shut. Panicked call to the animal ER ensued, with the advice that we give him benadryl and bring him in if he seemed to get worse. The benadryl helped the swelling, and he didn't seem particularly bothered by the giant neck lump thing. Rather, he was suddenly trying to eat his right front paw, which had no giant masses or obvious gushing wounds. The regular vet (whom we LOVE a bit slavishly, perhaps) had me drop him off this morning for prodding and poking.
This is a dog who spends maybe 5 minutes outside per day in total. He is afraid of other animals and birds, so he doesn't go after things that might bite him. Unlike a stupid dog my family used to have, he doesn't have a habit of eating bees and wasps. He has no business getting hurt because he has no time or opportunity to get hurt, is what I'm getting at.
The original plan had been for me to pick him up...about now, I guess. Unfortunately, he has to stay in overnight. He has a ridiculously high fever, and the drainage I thought was coming from his eyes themselves is actually goo/pus seeping through the skin of his eyelids, which the vet referred to as "freaky." When the vet that you adore and trust says that something that's wrong with your pet is "freaky," you start to worry a little bit. And the pus-seepage thing is the grossness I referred to in the cut tag, so if you could stomach that, it won't get any worse.
If he has an infection/abscess, he will be able to be treated and most likely cured, though it will be expensive. If, as preliminary tests are indicating, he has managed to get himself riddled with some sort of systemic fungal infection, attempts to fix him will be long, drawn-out, expensive, and probably unsuccessful. Which, btw, we can't afford. We can't afford the treatment for a bacterial infection, either, but it would be less. I never thought I'd be hoping for my dog to develop a hideous custard of a facial pus-pocket, but since that's the better alternative, let's all keep our fingers crossed for an oozetastic bacterial drama and not a cryptic fungal meltdown.
Oh, and: yay! Smallville. I was starting to feel kind of excited last night, but right now I'm a little preoccupied. Still, I really am looking forward to it. Another season of shirtlessness, cheese, head injuries, and kerfufflage is upon us!
