Mirage of Blaze: Does anyone have episodes 7-13 of Mirage of Blaze with the English subtitles? I downloaded the full run, watched through episode six, and then, upon opening up episode seven, realized that I still don't speak Japanese, much less at simultaneous translation speeds. The final half with English subs is now available on bitorrent, but only as part of a full series download, and at this point I'm at 400+ hours til completion, i.e., never.
Holiday grocery shopping: Went out at about 10:30 last night to get whipping cream for pies. The ghetto Kroger has u-scan check-out which is usually empty, but since it was a holiday eve, even those lines were long. I got a book from the book aisle and started reading until it was my turn. I even ended up buying the book (more on that below). As I was walking out, some greasy-haired little redneckess with her arms full of groceries pushed past me and announced to the cashier/monitor guy, "I don't want to wait in line. Is there a quicker way to get out of here?" Um, yeah, lady. The other hundred and fifty of us standing here just like waiting in lines.
Airport books / grocery store books: I don't really buy rack-size books any more, unless they're sci-fi and I'm in a real bookstore. However, this one had a positive quote from Neil Gaiman on the cover and, despite my (mostly proven) suspicions that he's a generous quote-whore, I flipped through. It starts awkwardly and probably won't get better, but it begins in a bakery and I was drawn in by a description of cinnamon rolls. It's by someone named Robin McKinley, whose name is vaguely familiar to me, and it's called Sunshine, in a Buffy-ish typeface. Now, in the light of day, I notice that it has another quote from an author I consider a "romance" writer below the Neil quote. It's got a Buffy ref in another quote on the back cover. It's got a quote from Amber Benson. Yes, noted literary critic Amber Benson. I think all these fantasy fuckers are conspiring to get me to read a bodice-ripper in the guise of a throat-ripper. I'll either love it or end up selling it unread, and right now I'm thinking it will be the latter.
Food: Mr. Glove is mashing potatoes. The sound of the mixer is like the hollow, nightmare roar of the equally-despised vacuum cleaner and if I were a dog, I'd be hooooowwwwling. It occurs to me that the foodsI like at holidays, i.e., potatoes and pie, are already here in my house, and I'm resenting the fact that we have to take them to someone else's house before we can eat them. We have movies to watch! I have wine! Let's just stay home! The knowledge that I can't get really drunk and silly and kiss on people at this party dampens my enthusiasm, as well.
Still, I hope everyone who celebrates (or is dragged kicking and screaming into) something is having a good time, or at least better than you'd hoped for. In other words, Happy Thanksgiving!

Date: 2004-11-26 07:42 pm (UTC)I hate dubs, too. I'd much rather hear the original voice actors. It drives me crazy, for instance, on the YnM dubs, that they pronounce the names differently in the dubbed version. What's wrong with leaving the pronounciation of Japanese names with Japanese (non)emphasis?

Date: 2004-11-26 07:49 pm (UTC)I've finished it and...yeah, uneven. I was quite disappointed. It's clearly setting up for a series, which made the ending sort of lame. It was a great idea, and I also liked the alternative world, but I thought first person was not the best way to handle world-building (it's very jarring and unnatural to go from what might be a conversation with a friend to a sudden history/civics lesson). Parts of it dragged on way too long, and it felt to me like it needed serious editing. In fact, it read like it hadn't been edited, really.
I'm a fan of fairytale retellings and despite not liking this book, I wouldn't dismiss her as an author out of hand for one mediocre book. Are her other books better paced/better edited?
