Mirage of Blaze: Does anyone have episodes 7-13 of Mirage of Blaze with the English subtitles? I downloaded the full run, watched through episode six, and then, upon opening up episode seven, realized that I still don't speak Japanese, much less at simultaneous translation speeds. The final half with English subs is now available on bitorrent, but only as part of a full series download, and at this point I'm at 400+ hours til completion, i.e., never.

Holiday grocery shopping: Went out at about 10:30 last night to get whipping cream for pies. The ghetto Kroger has u-scan check-out which is usually empty, but since it was a holiday eve, even those lines were long. I got a book from the book aisle and started reading until it was my turn. I even ended up buying the book (more on that below). As I was walking out, some greasy-haired little redneckess with her arms full of groceries pushed past me and announced to the cashier/monitor guy, "I don't want to wait in line. Is there a quicker way to get out of here?" Um, yeah, lady. The other hundred and fifty of us standing here just like waiting in lines.

Airport books / grocery store books: I don't really buy rack-size books any more, unless they're sci-fi and I'm in a real bookstore. However, this one had a positive quote from Neil Gaiman on the cover and, despite my (mostly proven) suspicions that he's a generous quote-whore, I flipped through. It starts awkwardly and probably won't get better, but it begins in a bakery and I was drawn in by a description of cinnamon rolls. It's by someone named Robin McKinley, whose name is vaguely familiar to me, and it's called Sunshine, in a Buffy-ish typeface. Now, in the light of day, I notice that it has another quote from an author I consider a "romance" writer below the Neil quote. It's got a Buffy ref in another quote on the back cover. It's got a quote from Amber Benson. Yes, noted literary critic Amber Benson. I think all these fantasy fuckers are conspiring to get me to read a bodice-ripper in the guise of a throat-ripper. I'll either love it or end up selling it unread, and right now I'm thinking it will be the latter.

Food: Mr. Glove is mashing potatoes. The sound of the mixer is like the hollow, nightmare roar of the equally-despised vacuum cleaner and if I were a dog, I'd be hooooowwwwling. It occurs to me that the foodsI like at holidays, i.e., potatoes and pie, are already here in my house, and I'm resenting the fact that we have to take them to someone else's house before we can eat them. We have movies to watch! I have wine! Let's just stay home! The knowledge that I can't get really drunk and silly and kiss on people at this party dampens my enthusiasm, as well.

Still, I hope everyone who celebrates (or is dragged kicking and screaming into) something is having a good time, or at least better than you'd hoped for. In other words, Happy Thanksgiving!

While I have not done it you can, if you use Azereus for you BT downloads, go to the part called files and then right click (I think) and say I dont want these parts of a multi file just these.

Some research on the net may show how to do same for you client if not Azereus.

Thank you for the advice! I had been using the "official" Bram Cohen version of BT which unfortunately pretty much sucks. After reading this, I downloaded Azureus and, while my download is still WAY slower than I'd like, I was able to speed it up a bit.

So, thank you, thank you! I am most grateful!

I can't find anything beyond episode six of Mirage of Blaze with subs. All the others I found were either in japanese, or dubbed, which I really can't stand watching.

It looks like the English subs of 7-13 came out in the last couple of weeks, so they're fairly new. Hopefully, they're good quality, i.e., like 1-6 seemed to be.

I hate dubs, too. I'd much rather hear the original voice actors. It drives me crazy, for instance, on the YnM dubs, that they pronounce the names differently in the dubbed version. What's wrong with leaving the pronounciation of Japanese names with Japanese (non)emphasis?

Mashing potatoes with a machine? What is it with you crazy Americans? Get him one of those old fashioned masher things and you need never listen to its horrible whine again.

If he complains, point out that chefs don't use silly machines and they know all the short cuts. My mum was shocked and horrified that after years of using an electric or hand beater to whip cream, an egg whisk does it faster and better.

Hand smasher? No thanks. My task was to smash eight pounds of organic russets (that would be about 3.62 kilos says Google), and they needed to be whipped to perfection. Alas, my poor puny liberal girlie man arms are way too atrophied to wield anything but a huge power tool to cook with.

I would actually prefer a crank ricer. I would make a nice gnocchi. Mmmmm.

Robin McKinley mostly writes young adult fantasy (The Blue Sword, The Hero and the Crown) and fairytale retellings (Deerskin, Rose Daughter, Spindle's End). I love her stuff and actually bought *Sunshine* in hardcover. It is sort of uneven, and quite different than her normal stuff--sort of fairy tale meets vampire romance novel--but I quite enjoyed it after I made it through the first few chapters. I think I liked the alternate world history she created in it best. (I'm surfing in from friendsfriends, hope you don't mind me randomly commenting!)

That would explain why I've heard her name - I don't read as much myself, but a lot of my friends read YA stories.

I've finished it and...yeah, uneven. I was quite disappointed. It's clearly setting up for a series, which made the ending sort of lame. It was a great idea, and I also liked the alternative world, but I thought first person was not the best way to handle world-building (it's very jarring and unnatural to go from what might be a conversation with a friend to a sudden history/civics lesson). Parts of it dragged on way too long, and it felt to me like it needed serious editing. In fact, it read like it hadn't been edited, really.

I'm a fan of fairytale retellings and despite not liking this book, I wouldn't dismiss her as an author out of hand for one mediocre book. Are her other books better paced/better edited?

Yup, I have them up on Streamload currently... Do you still have an account there I could send them to?

I'd love to take you up on this, but streamload is, as always, screwing with my payment. I had let my account lapse, clicked on a paypal button to pay, and my money has flown into a void. Until they apply the funds to my account, it's down. But can I e-mail you when I'm ready? I really loved the first six eps of this and I'm dying for the rest ;)

Sure, they'll be there for a good while yet, so there's no hurry. :) Just drop me a note at "zero@zero-consequences.net" when you'd like me to send them.

Have you read the Lucifer comics, based on the version of Lucifer Morningstar created by Gaimen? They are interesting, and it just so happens I have them in digital format, if you want to take a look...

Also there is a comic coming out titled Ascend that looks interesting

No, I haven't read them, but I'd love to! I think I'd seen that title on the stands, but I didn't realize it was Gaiman-related. I've loved the version of Lucifer from Sandman and Murder Mysteries, so more would definitely be of interest.

Ascend looks amazing. Absolutely beautiful.
