Mr. G and I are leaving for a short trip tomorrow with Rhi and Mr. Rhi. While I've had a really good time on recent trips, there have also been...signs and portents. Am I building up to something truly horrible (maiming? loss of limb?), or will the pattern hold steady at non-life-threatening annoyances?
Example: Atlanta trip:
annoyances:
good things:
New York trip:
annoyances:
good things:
luddite: My relationship with technology is adversarial lately, and I am back to using the old, slow laptop (thankfully, I still have that option) because the bright and shiny new one has a dead monitor and must be sent to a distant land for repair. The old, slow laptop is winning points with me for being, if nothing else, dependable.
Example: Atlanta trip:
annoyances:
- dropped beloved camera on cement in terraced cemetery (v. cool, btw) and broke it
- trouble sleeping due to INCREDIBLY LOUD SNORING from neighboring room
- was near tears due to caffeine headache and scared a waitress, offended churchgoers
- got rained on and rained on and rained on
- lost house keys in bathroom of really bad Italian restaurant but did not discover this until ~200 miles later
- ate incredibly foul cupcake
- was overheated and over-dewy entire time
good things:
- felt friend's baby kicking or punching or having a tantrum
- raisin bagel with apple butter
- traffic in Atlanta less daunting this trip compared to last
- dozens of deer
- rain stopped in time for Tori Amos to come onstage to play the piano and sing
- we never got lost, although we weren't sure where we were from time to time
New York trip:
annoyances:
- had to buy new camera to take location pictures (inspirational/useful for novel)
- took Southwest Airlines, which meant 2-1/2 hour wait for LIRR train from suburban airport into city
- room at hostel was v. clean but reeked of bug spray (on positive side, no bugs detected)
- lost driver's license
- "found" driver's license at hostel where they had "been waiting for [me] to come get it" even though I'd been talking to them every fucking day, giving name and room number, etc., with no mention of fact they'd had my license all week
- forgot battery charger for new camera; battery died in midst of important location shot walk
- managed to seriously injure toe in oddly painless stubbing accident
- Costume Institute @ Met closed
- Sandwich and juice @ Met: $16
- was overheated and over-dewy entire time
- despite moisture excess, was strangely haggard and desiccated and looked actual age
- perfect-fitting jeans plus high heat and humidity provide unpleasant effect of wearing jeans damp and steaming out of poorly-functioning drier
- battery charger for camera was actually in suitcase entire time
good things:
-
pun and Sir Pun and their hospitality
- the futon on Sir Pun's floor
- excellent cupcake experience
- brandied cherries and stinky cheese
- Saks' perfume counter personnel and their generous gift certificate program
- Jivamukti yoga
- that I actually have perfect-fitting jeans
- finally trying a Pimm's Cup and really, really liking it
- seeing
barely_bean,
corinna5, and
scribblinlenore
- 24-hour Gristede's one block from hostel
- the subway.
- Isaac Mizrahi almost ran into me on the sidewalk on his way into a convenience store and gave me a lovely, lovely apologetic smile. He's both more handsome and taller than I would have guessed, and he was tan and freckled and dressed all in white and if he needs a hag, I am SO available.
